Patient-specific Knee Surgery Instrumentation
Greater function and longer life...
One of the recent knee replacement advancements enables surgeons to use surgical instrumentation that is custom tailored to each patient. Patient-matched instruments allow for more precise knee implant alignment. Better aligned knee replacements may reduce wear, a leading cause of early implant failure. Even a slightly misaligned implant can cause uneven implant wear, loosening, and instability. Any of the above issues can contribute to early implant failure and follow-up surgeries.
Patient-matched knee replacement begins by taking MRI and X-Ray images of the affected leg and incorporating these into an advanced software program that generates virtual images of a patient’s knee. Surgical instruments and guides are then designed and built, mapping out specific bone cuts to accurately align the implants. While this approach can speed recovery time, the normal feel and movement of the knee implant may also accelerate recuperation, as the patient won’t need additional time to adjust to a knee that doesn’t ‘feel right’.
