Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used for treating a spinal compression fracture resulting from osteoporosis. It is one of the most commonly performed spine surgeries at Northern Westchester Hospital.
Kyphoplasty is a spine surgery procedure in which a small incision is made in the back. Guided by a scope, the doctor inserts a small tube into the fractured area of the vertebrae. The doctor inserts a special balloon into the vertebrae through the tube and gently inflates it. As the balloon inflates, the fractured vertebrae is gently pushed to its more normal shape. The balloon is removed and the space is filled with a cement-like material that hardens and stabilizes the bone.
